Congress poll alliance with BJP in Kerala shameful: Karat

Special Correspondent

"It makes a mockery of commitment to fight communalism"

KOLKATA: The Congress leadership in Kerala "has made a mockery of its national commitment to fight communalism" by taking the "shameful step" of entering into an electoral understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party at many places for the elections to local bodies in that State, general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Prakash Karat, said in a statement here on Thursday.

"In order to capture the local bodies the Congress-led United Democratic Front has not hesitated to enter into such an electoral understanding for the coming polls," Mr. Karat said.

Over the past four years the UDF Government in the State had "undermined" the process of strengthening the panchayats and municipalities and ensuring democratic de-centralisation, he said. On the contrary its policies "have led to an erosion in [the standards of] public education, health and the public distribution system.
