BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday dismissed as withdrawn petitions by several private colleges and directed the State Government to respond to their request to fill up vacant seats by admitting students based on the marks secured by them in the pre-university examination. Justice S. Abdul Nazeer passed the order on the petitions by AECS Maruthi Dental College of Bangalore, KLE Society's College of Dental Sciences of Bangalore, B.R. Ambedkar Dental College of Bangalore, and Bapuji Education Association's Bapuji Dental College and Hospital and College of Dental Sciences, both in Davangere.
Apex court verdict
The court passed the order following a similar direction by the Supreme Court in a case pertaining to A.B. Shetty Institute of Dental Sciences. It asked the five colleges to submit to the State Government the names of students to whom the institute wished to admit to the dental (BDS) course based on their marks in pre-university examination even if they had not appeared for the entrance tests of either COMED-K or the CET Cell. The Supreme Court had also asked the Government to examine the names given by the institute and inform within one week whether it had other students with better merit or having higher marks than those submitted by the institute.
Students' list
Basing its order on the Supreme Court verdict, Mr. Justice Nazeer allowed the dental colleges to submit their list of students, who have not appeared for any entrance examination, to the Government by September 27. The Government, in turn, was directed to respond by September 29.
