ELURU: The flood-related toll reached 13 as of now in West Godavari district, according to official report released to the media by the administration on Thursday. Five persons were killed in Jangareddygudem division, two in Eluru and three each in Kovvur and Narsapur divisions. Electrocution was the cause of death of five persons, while the rest died in wall collapse and cold weather. An extent of 1.65 lakh acres of cropped area was submerged while 2,866 houses got either fully or partially damaged in different parts of the district. The damaged crops included paddy, banana, sugarcane, coconut, chilli, turmeric, blackgram, vegetables, cotton, tobacco and cashew.
Tanks breached
Some six minor irrigation tanks suffered breaches- five in Dwaraka Tirumala mandal alone. Even as the flood victims in many parts are recovering from shock, although on a slow pace, the threat of deluge for the villages in Kolleru lake appears to be not far from over. Water level in the lake is going up fast and all the flooding streams and drains kept joining it carrying heavy discharges. Consequently, the inhabitants of Nidammaru, Pathepuram, Pedanidrakolanu and Tokalapalli have come under a grim threat of inundation. A large number of fish tanks in the lake were destroyed and fish washed away. Yanamadurru drain caused a fresh deluge in Mentevari Tota area.
