SCR seeks police help against extremist acts

Staff Reporter

`Track tampering and stone-pelting too are areas of concern'

  • Railway police, RPF and State police meet
  • SCR chief calls for better understanding between the three
  • Stone-pelting on MMTS condemned

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway (SCR) General Manager D.N. Mathur on Thursday sought the help of the State Intelligence wing in curbing incidents like blasting of railway stations by extremists and tampering of railway tracks, especially near the bridges.

Speaking at the high-level coordination meeting between Railway officials, Government Railway Police, Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the State police here, Mr. Mathur said that though the RPF had its intelligence-gathering wing, it would be better if the State police gathered information, as their reach was more than the RPF.

    `Sitting duck'

Raising concern over the growing number of stone-pelting incidents on the MMTS in and around Hyderabad, especially at Hussainsagar, he said the agencies needed to be more vigilant.

"The Railways is a sitting duck whenever people want to vent their ire on some issue. If intelligence is gathered in advance, preventive steps can be taken," he said.

The Additional DGP (Railways), A. Sivasankar also spoke.
