NELLORE: One person, said to be a Telugu Desam Party (TDP) sympathiser, was killed and more than 20 others belonging to both the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party were injured in Chennayapalem Pattapupalem, a fishermen hamlet of Kavali rural mandal of Nellore district, on Thursday, following hurling of country-made bombs by rival groups. The deceased has been identified as Lakshmaiah (65). Among the injured, 13 were said to be belonging to the TDP and the remaining to the Congress party. Four of the seriously injured have been shifted to Nellore town for treatment and enquiries have revealed that they were out of danger. Chennayapalem, has been frequently in news for clashes between two groups mainly belonging to the TDP and Congress party. In fact, till August, there were special police pickets in the village and only recently the warring groups promised to the police that they were patching up the differences. However, on Thursday, there was a free for all between the two groups followed by hurling of bombs. Many villagers fled the village and latest reports indicated that the village had been deserted.
Fight over liquor shop
According to the Superintendent of Police, B. Shivadhar Reddy, the trouble was over a liquor shop owned by some Congress functionaries, who were annoyed over alleged illicit distillation activity by the TDP cadre, affecting their business. Kurnool Staff Reporter writes: Tension prevailed in Dhone town on Thursday as supporters of the Congress and the TDP clashed several times since Wednesday night. The Congress supporters allegedly attacked a Tata Sumo in which the TDP supporters were travelling. The party leaders and the MLA, Kotla Sujathamma, were staging a protest near the police station against the incidents of the previous night. On seeing the TDP vehicle, the Congressmen attacked it and chased away the persons travelling in it.
