NEW DELHI: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Thursday approved an expenditure of Rs. 298.76 crores for conservation and management of the Dal and Nagin lakes in Srinagar. The cost of the project will be borne by the Centre. The project, likely to be completed by March 2010, will improve water quality and ecology as well as arrest further shrinking of the lake area. This will also yield significant health benefits to the people there as well as the tourist population. It is proposed to divert raw sewage, now released into the lakes, into six treatment plants having a total capacity of 36.7 million litres a day to cater for sewage flows up to 2017. Other measures proposed include a comprehensive system for sanitation in peripheral villages, houseboats and hamlets (including collection and treatment of sewage); proper collection and disposal of solid waste generated in the settlements within the lake and on its periphery; catchment area treatment to reduce silt in the lake; diversion works in the Telbal Nala settling basin; completion of remaining works for outlets of Nala Amir Khan and Brari Numbal cut; and dredging and de-weeding in selective areas. The Union Environment and Forests Ministry identified polluted urban lakes under the National Lake Conservation Plan. The others are Sukhna (Chandigarh), Sagar (Madhya Pradesh), Nainital (Uttar Pradesh), Kodaikanal and Udhagamandalam (Tamil Nadu), Udaipur (Rajasthan), Rabindra Sarowar (West Bengal), Powai (Maharashtra), and Hussain Sagar (Andhra Pradesh).
