BANGALORE: For Bangalore-based inventor R. Prakash Urs, the effort to make electric lamps, including tubelights and compact fluorescent lamps last twice as long, took more than a year and a half. "It can also work on sodium vapour lamps or other lamps which have a filament," he says of his innovation. His invention seems fairly simple. However, there is some technology involved. He has patented the "reincarnation bulb" which comes with two filaments. While the bulb is burning only one filament is used and the other remains as a standby. This filament takes over when the first filament has burned out. "An electric bulb that is supposed to work for 1,000 hours, at a rate of five hours a day, can have its life extended to 1,900 to 2,000 hours," Mr. Prakash says. He also claims that his invention is eco-friendly as it minimises the heat emitted into the atmosphere. "While manufacturing a bulb, a lot of power is required to convert the silicon into glass and heat is emitted to the atmosphere," he says. If the same technology is applied for manufacturing bulbs all over the world, energy can be saved. Durability is looked down in these days of consumerism and I feel the trend should be reversed if the environment is to be saved," he says.
