62,000 policemen for poll duty
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
A 62,000-strong police force would be deployed on bandobust duty for municipal elections, the Director General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, has said.
Reviewing the security arrangements for the polls with district Superintendents of Police and Commissioners of Police through a video-conference on Thursday, Mr. Sen noted with satisfaction that only 34 incidents of pre-poll violence were reported and most of them took place in the politically sensitive districts of Krishna, Guntur and Kadapa.
He asked the SPs and Commissioners to continue with preventive arrests to ensure peace on the eve of polls. Over 1,200 people were picked up in such arrests all over the State.
He said about 140 polling booths were identified as hypersensitive and sensitive. They were Kadapa (66), Dharmavaram (38) and Narsaraopet (14).
Mr. Sen urged the SPs to pay attention to providing security to people's representatives and step up intelligence on the entry of outsiders.
The conference was also addressed by Additional Directors General of Police, P.V. Naidu (Law and Order), R.P. Singh (Planning and Logistics) and K. Arvind Rao (Intelligence).
