CHENNAI: Nursery and primary schools under the Chennai District Primary Education office that have not yet applied for approval or renewed their approval should hand in their applications immediately, Chennai Collector S. Chandramohan said. In a release, he said this was the last opportunity and reminder to the schools to apply for approval and renewal. As on September 1, Chennai had 134 unapproved nursery and primary schools, and 33 schools without renewal orders. The schools have to upgrade infrastructure and safety mechanisms, provide facilities such as drinking water and sanitation, and get their structural safety certified before submitting their applications to the Chennai District Primary Education office. A six-member team representing various departments, including education, revenue, health and fire and rescue services, would inspect the schools and provide certificates of approval. Schools that did not submit their applications would be denied approval by the Government and education department, according to a Government order dated September 14, the release said.
Readmission
More than 20 lakh children may be displaced due to readmission in case the government goes ahead with its announcement to close down unapproved schools that do not meet the regulations, a section of the nursery and primary schools managements has said. Though regulations were imposed, thousands of schools were yet to comply, says J.S.N. Nimmu Vasanth, founder president of Foundation for Innovative Casework on Education, economy and environment (FICAS). President of Tamil Nadu Nursery, Primary, Matriculation and Higher Secondary Schools' Welfare Association Ananda Arumugam said the association and FICAS would meet with experts in the field of non-formal education on Saturday to shape a proposal. They will organise a peace march on September 30.
