dated September 24, 1955: Floods: PM's advice

Prime Minister Nehru told engineers at a meeting in Cuttack on September 22 that while floods were inevitable, greater attention to details in the reconstruction of villages should be paid immediately. He suggested that houses should in future be built on raised and high ground so that they may escape the fury of the floods. He said that to boost the morale of the people, mere gratuitous relief would not help, unless it was coupled with work. He also stressed the imperative need to see that the help given by the various agencies reached everyone. The conference was attended by the Governor, Mr. P.S. Kumaraswami Raja, the Chief Minister, Mr. Nabakrushna Choudhri and the Relief Minister, Mr. Radhanath Rath, who gave the Prime Minister an official account of the flood control measures in Orissa and the efforts made for implementing them.
