SALEM: The district administration will conduct a variety of events and contests every Saturday from the first week of October at the ongoing Government Exhibition. Talking to reporters here on Friday, Collector A. Sukumaran said that dog show, flower show, vegetable display and contests in cookery and healthy baby would be organised. He said the exhibition evoked an overwhelming response and about 74,000 people had visited it so far. The administration received Rs. 3.5 lakhs as entry fee.
SHG special pavilion
Public response to the products made by self-help groups (SHG) was also commendable. "About 120 SHGs are exhibiting their products at the 9000 sq. ft.-special pavilion created for them. Till September 22, they sold products worth Rs. 38 lakhs," he said and added that special exhibitions to sell SHG products would soon be organised at various places. He said the Salem Corporation would construct a temporary toilet in addition to the existing one at the exhibition venue. The Department of Family Welfare had put up a first aid centre at its stall and the Corporation was organising a free medical and diabetic camp.
Special buses to venue
The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation was operating 110 special buses from various places. Mr. Sukumaran said the administration would give 50 per cent concession to school students for which schools had to apply for permission in advance. Physically challenged and children from orphanages would be given free entry.
LPG misuse
Earlier at a meeting on Thursday, the Collector warned that severe action would be initiated against those using domestic LPG cylinders for commercial purposes under the Essential Commodities Act. Criminal action would be taken against door-delivery employees for irregularities.
`Verify ration cards'
He asked LPG distribution agents to verify ration cards while providing new gas connections. Agents should note down the ration card number during refilling also. He appealed to the officials from oil companies to raid commercial establishments frequently to prevent misuse of domestic LPG. District Revenue Officer T.P. Rajesh, District Supply Officer Ramalingam, officials from oil companies and agents were present at the meeting.
`Take action on petitions'
In another meeting on Thursday, Mr. Sukumaran instructed officials to take proper action against petitions received from pensioners and treat them with care. He said pensioners' family protection fund and medical benefits were distributed to all the applicants. He received 47 petitions during the meeting. Director, Pension, S. Rajasekar, presided over the meeting.
