Create more jobs for the disabled: Navin Chawla

Special Correspondent

`Society should contribute to take disability movement forward'

CHENNAI: More jobs should be created to enable the disabled to realise their potential and vocational opportunities generated to match special abilities, Navin Chawla, Election Commissioner, said.

There were exceptional people among the disabled whose potential should be matched with the creation of exceptional opportunities, he said while inaugurating Sound of Silence, a festival of silent movies, organised by Ability Foundation here on Friday to commemorate the International Deaf Awareness Week.

Civil society should contribute in every way possible to take the disability movement forward, he added.

"Sensitise men in uniform"

Stressing on the need for men in uniform to be sensitised to the needs of the disabled, R. Natraj, Commissioner of Police for Greater Chennai, said the police force was making efforts to reach out to all sections of society. As a first step, Ability Foundation would train 20 policemen in the use of sign language.

A dedicated helpline for the disabled had been set up in the police control room, he added.

Six silent movies would be screened at Satyam Cinemas on Saturday. They include Zoo (Netherlands), The Kid (USA), Pushpak (India), The Iron Mask (USA), Light of Asia (India) and Monsieur Hulot's Holiday (France).

Course for beginners

On Monday, the Foundation would conduct a sign language course for beginners.

Mohan Verghese Chunkath, State Special Commissioner for the Disabled, S.P. Thyagarajan, Vice-Chancellor, University of Madras, Naresh Gupta, State Election Commissioner and Jayashree Raveendran, executive director, Ability Foundation, were also present.
