A rally for the spirited

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: It is a rally meant for those blessed with the spirit of adventure and a passion to drive on the treacherous terrain. The Seventh Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya Rally -- reckoned as the country's most arduous high-altitude motor sport rally -- will take off from Shimla on October 1 and pass through Jalori Pass, Rohtang Pass, Kunzum La, Kaza, Daralacha, Sarchu, Pang, Leh, Kargil and Drass before finishing at Srinagar on October 8. A total of 100 rally enthusiasts participating in three different versions -- Xtreme, Reliability and Bikes Xtreme -- would cover a distance of 2,000 km and pass through areas where the temperature drops to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. Xtreme is the toughest of the lot and is open to four-wheel drivers who have had rallying experience and preferably competed in the Maruti Suzuki Raid-de-Himalaya Rally.

The Reliability version would run only on the State highways and is open to motor sport enthusiasts who would like to drive on the mountains but want to keep away from the tough competition, difficulty and stress involved in the Xtreme.
