Plus 2 marks for admission to dental colleges

J. Venkatesan

Many seats in 36 colleges go vacant at end of counselling

  • Admission on merit
  • Colleges to give names in admission list to Government
  • Colleges to give wide publicity for admission
  • Government unable to fill seats

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Friday permitted the members of the Karnataka Private Dental Colleges Association to admit students to the lapsed seats in the BDS course on the basis of marks obtained in the PUC (10 Plus 2).

A Bench, comprising Justice Y.K. Sabharwal and Justice C.K. Thakker, passed this order on an application from the Association since a large number of seats remained vacant in the 36 private dental colleges in the State at the end of counselling.

In its order, the Bench said "the colleges would give the names of the students to whom they wish to give admission on account of availability of eligible students from COMED-K.

The State Government would examine the list and if it has any other candidate better in merit and/or has higher PUC marks, the colleges shall be informed about the particulars of the said candidate within one week of the receipt of the list from the said colleges. In case, no reply is received by the colleges within one week of handing over of the list of candidates, it would be open to the colleges to grant them admission."

    Few takers

In its application, the Association said from 2004-2005 the demand for dental seats in the State and all over India had been declining especially on account of a very large number of dental colleges that had been started in the country in the recent past. For the year 2005-2006 there were many vacant seats in the BDS course after the exhaustion of the eligibility lists of both the entrance tests in respect of the government and management quotas.
