Salt iodisation notification by November

Ministry seeks Chief Ministers' cooperation in implementation of ban in rural areas

NEW DELHI: The notification on compulsory iodisation of edible salt is likely to be issued by November, Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said here on Saturday.

In June, the Government announced the ban on sale of non-iodised salt and said only iodised salt would be sold in the market after August 15. But this deadline was extended to meet the mandatory requirement of a three-month period to receive responses after the issue of the draft notification.

"The Ministry has received 1,500 responses and we would be in a position to issue the final notification by November,'' Dr. Ramadoss said.

On opposition by small-scale manufacturers, he said the ban was only on the sale of non-iodised salt for human consumption. Non-iodised salt could be manufactured for animal consumption and industrial use.
