BELGAUM: More than 2,000 people have been shifted to safety from nearly 60 villages in Athani, Saundatti, Ramdurg and Gokak taluks after heavy rainfall since Thursday caused the Krishna, the Malaprabha and the Ghataprabha to swell.

No damage to life or property has been reported, although a few petty shops and houses in low-lying areas have been partially submerged, the Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner, S.M. Sonnad, said.

However, the rivers are receding with rainfall easing in the catchment areas. The situation is expected to return to normal soon, he said.

The inflow into the Krishna came down from 1.20 lakh cusecs on Thursday to 64,000 cusecs on Friday. The inflow into the Alamatti Dam was 76,346 cusecs and the outflow 70,700. The water-level in the dam on Saturday was at 519.18 m. The water-level in the Hippargi barrage was 522 m and all the gates remained open.

Gauging stations at Kudachi and Dharur showed the Krishna flowing at 526 m and 524 m respectively, he said.

Four villages in Hukkeri taluk, Sankeshwar town, 31 villages in Gokak taluk, 11 in Saundatti and nine in Ramdurg taluk and parts of Ramdurg town have been affected. In Gokak, 10 villages have been completely marooned by the waters of the Ghataprabha and 800 persons have been shifted to a camp at the APMC Yard.

Ramdurg town has also been affected by the overflowing Malaprabha, and people living in the low-lying areas have been shifted to safety, he said.

The administration has deployed rescue teams and boats to shift the affected people. Food, shelter and medical aid have been arranged, Mr. Sonnad added.

Deputy Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh visited the affected areas in Ramdurg on Saturday.
