NEW DELHI: It may have been routed in the recent Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections, but Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) now has some consolation with nine of its candidates emerging winners in elections to the 11-member Executive Committee of the Union. The elections to the Executive Committee were held on Friday, with 11 central councillors being elected to the union for the coming year. Although the elections usually witness much drama with various student outfits claiming the winners as their own, ABVP this time has been the only one to make the claim, and to prove that the candidates were indeed of the organisation, it introduced them to the media as their members. The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), which won all the central panel seats of DUSU this year, has this time managed only two councillor seats -- Pradeep of Deshbandhu College and Shashi Kant of Ram Lal Anand College. For the ABVP, the winners include Arun Kumar of Sri Aurobindo College, Rahul Khatana of Dyal Singh College (E), Jitender Singh of PGDAV College (E), Rohit Chahal of the College of Vocational Studies, Jitender of Motilal Nehru College, Tarun Panwar of A & U Tibbia College, Ashok of Deshbandhu College, Pooja Jain of Shyam Lal Anand College and Sakshi Mittal of Shyam Lal Anand College. Though not very significant, ABVP feels that having a majority in the Executive Committee will help raise the morale of its cadre, especially since the last two years have brought little cheer in terms of campus presence. With ABVP's plea for a recount of the DUSU election votes under consideration of the High Court, ABVP is still hoping for a turn of events.
