Delay in laying railway line decried

State passengers' association leader threatens fast-unto-death

KAKINADA: The Andhra Pradesh Passengers' Association, at its meeting here recently, passed a resolution against the Centre's "laissez faire attitude'' towards laying the 20 km rail line connecting the port town with Pithapuram on the Chennai-Kolkata trunk route, despite a number of representations to the Railway Ministry on the issue.

Association president S.S. Krishnaji, who chaired the meeting, recalled how several VVIPs, including two Railway Ministers, had promised the people of Kakinada that their demand would be conceded.

``All such promises had gone into oblivion. The first survey for the line was conducted in 1950, and the second one in 1998 at the instance of then MP of Kakinada U.V. Krishnamraju, who had also succeeded in including the project in the 1999 Railway Budget, with a measly allocation of Rs.1 lakh,'' he said.

Mr. Krishanji reiterated his threat to go on a fast-unto-death if the Railway Ministry dilly-dallied further on this issue.

`Gana Kala' magazine editor Munuganti Sriramamurty deplored the "miserable failure" of the Centre in according justice to the people of Kakinada, and wanted execution of the project immediately.

Direct trains

He also sought running of direct express trains to Mumbai and Kolkata from Kakinada.
