`Legal awareness must for elected members'

Camp for the women members of the milk producers' cooperative societies held

Principal District and Sessions Judge Vijay Siriyannavar speaking at a legal awareness workshop for the women members of the milk producers' cooperative societies in Shimoga on Saturday.

SHIMOGA: Principal District and Sessions Judge Vijay Siriyannavar said here on Saturday that there is a need to create legal awareness among the elected representatives to help them discharge their duties and responsibilities towards the people more effectively.

Inaugurating a legal awareness camp for the women members of the milk producers' cooperative societies, organised by the Shimoga District Legal Services Authority, Shimoga Bar Association and the Shimoga Milk Producers' Union Ltd, a unit of the Karnataka Milk Federation, he said: "It is important to enlighten people that nobody is above the law and as such it is necessary for everyone to be aware of the legal consequences."

He lauded the District Legal Services Authority for initiating steps to create legal awareness among the people in rural areas and added that it is not enough if people become literate.

They should become legal literates too, he said.

President of SHIMUL Revanasiddappa presided over the function.

Deputy Commissioner T.K. Anilkumar, president of the Shimoga Bar Association K. Basappa Gowda, Executive Director of the KMF S.K. Mahadev and Member-Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority Prabhavati Hiremath were present.
