HYDERABAD: Describing the conduct of elections as `by and large peaceful', the Director-General of Police, Swaranjit Sen, has said that 31 persons have been arrested in 13 election-related offences all over the State on Saturday. He told reporters here that 40 persons were identified with the incidents that included group clashes, protests, damage of an electronic voting machine in Chittoor district and a case of impersonation in Nizamabad. He said cases against MPs and MLAs, who were alleged to have been involved, would be booked after a careful examination. The incident of attack on media persons and Telugu Desam Party workers in Nellore town allegedly at the behest of Congress MLA, A. Vivekananda Reddy, would be dealt with seriously. Mr. Sen expressed happiness that the polls passed off without the police having to open fire. The peaceful conduct of polls minimised problems for the police although the projections were that they were in for trouble. More preventive arrests were made taking the total figure to 588, he added.
