Rain causes damage

to rail track

KHAMMAM: The rail track between Papatapalli village in Khammam district and Dornakal station in Warangal was hit badly once again because of downpour last night.

All the long-distance trains, including Navajeevan Express, Kerala Express, Howrah Express and Himsagar Express were diverted via Guntur, while a few other trains were cancelled, according to the railway sources.

They explained that a single line was restored after heavy flood four days ago. The track was found further weakened by the rain last night. - Staff Reporter

Central team to visit

East Godavari

Rajahmundry: The Central relief team is going to visit East Godavari district on September 27. District Collector Anil Kumar Singhal said on Saturday that the team would assess the flood loss in the district.

The Collector said the administration distributed Rs.500 in cash, 20 kg of rice and 5 litres of kerosene to flood victims. - Staff Reporter

Release of Virasam

member sought

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Forum has sought the intervention of the Home Minister, K. Jana Reddy, in ordering the release of the arrested Virasam member, Valla Mohan.

The forum vice-president, S. Jeevan Kumar, said in a statement on Saturday that the arrest of Sri Venkateswara University law student by the Anantapur police on September 18 was conveyed by his parents. He criticised the police for not producing the arrested in a court and termed his detention `illegal.'

Change in timings of

Urdu medium schools

HYDERABAD: Timings of the Urdu medium schools in the State will be changed from 8 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. during Ramzan enabling Muslims to observe fast during the holy month.

Orders to this effect were issued by the Director of School Education. The changed timings will be in effect from October 6 to November 3, according to a press release by Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union president, P. Subba Reddy, and general secretary, A. Anantaramulu. - Special Correspondent

ELURU: Three persons sustained injuries in an election-related clash between the Congress and the TDP at Palacole in West Godavari district.

Two die as bus

plunges into ditch

TIRUPATI: Two persons were killed when a bus plunged into a ditch near Srikalahasti in the district on Saturday.

The private tourist bus, which was proceeding from Srisailam to Tirupati, lost control and hit the sidewall of a culvert before falling into the ditch. - Staff Reporter

Ryots block traffic

KURNOOL: Hundreds of farmers staged a road blockade in Nandikotkur town on Saturday demanding supply of fertilizers. Traffic on the Kurnool-Guntur road was held up for five hours and vehicles got stranded to a distance of six km.

Former Vice-Chairman

of UGC dead

VISAKHAPATNAM: An eminent space physicist and former Vice-Chairman of the University Grants Commission, B. Ramachandra Rao, died at his residence here on Saturday. He was 83 and is survived by wife and son.

Prof. Rao received the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in 1965. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Handloom exhibition

in Karimnagar

KARIMNAGAR: In order to clear pending stocks and encourage the weaving community, the district administration is organising "Chenetha raagalu," an handloom exhibition at SRR kalyana mandalam in Karimnagar town till October 2. Some 42 handloom weavers cooperative societies from 15 districts were participating in the exhibition by putting up 40 stalls and displaying Rs 90 lakhs worth stocks of various varieties. - Staff Reporter

YSR coming today

Rajahmundry: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will visit the city on Sunday. According to Minister for Roads and Buildings Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao, Dr. Reddy would land at the Arts College grounds around 10.30 a.m. and would see the photo exhibition on flood damage at R and B Guest House and have a official review meeting.

The Chief Minister is expected to visit one or two areas in the city, mostly Aryapuram, to interact with flood victims to take stock of relief measures. He will spend one and a half hour in the city. - Staff Reporter

Kakinada: Five students of Aditya Public School, Jagannaickpur have excelled in the preliminary round and selected for the final round of the Naional Math's Olympiad organised by the Ramanujan Math's Academy here on September 3.
