Smooth polling in Puttur, Nagari municipalities

Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: The municipal elections passed off peacefully in Puttur and Nagari. While Puttur witnessed an impressive polling percentage of 70, Nagari fared even better with 80 per cent voters exercising their franchise.

Puttur witnessed minor skirmishes in Cherlopally, where the TDP and Congress workers almost tried to capture booths in their strongholds but for the timely intervention of the police.

The Congress MLA G. Muddukrishnama Naidu, visited all the polling booths, while the TDP leader Sivakoteswara Reddy, accused him of spreading terror and coercing TDP workers. "His gunmen threatened our men in public." he charged.

There were rumours that cane fields belonging to a Congress leader in Amaramkandriga hamlet were torched. Fire service personnel rushed to the village only to find it a hoax. The AIADMK, whose leader D.N.Elumalai was detained twice, is expecting to put a better show than the TDP.

Leaders remain indoors

Interestingly, the leaders of the rival camps, R. Chenga Reddy (Congress) and Roja (TDP), preferred not to come out. Polling went off peacefully in the wards in Ekambarakuppam, Karakantapuram, Nagaripet and Pudupet.
