Peaceful in Anantapur

Staff Reporter

Over 65 per cent of voters exercise their franchise

  • Polling begins on dull note
  • Missing of names from voter list is the common complaint
  • Two held on charge of impersonation attempt

ANANTAPUR: Except a few minor incidents, polling to the municipal corporation and five municipalities in the district was peaceful on Saturday.

Though the polling began on a dull note, it picked up later. By noon more than 30 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the six towns. An average of 65 per cent polling was recorded.

Missing of names from the voters' list was the common complaint made by voters. CPI activists allegedly roughed up the supporters of an independent candidate in the 41st division for their alleged impersonation attempt. The police took into custody two persons on the charges of attempting impersonation.

In Dharmavaram long queues were seen in almost all polling stations. Several TDP polling agents reportedly received threatening calls in the morning directing them not to act as agents.

    TDP leaders held

The weavers' town witnessed tense moments late on Friday night as the Congress legislator from Singanamala, S. Sailajanath, who is the party in-charge to the town, staged a dharna in front of the police station asking the police to send out the TDP legislator from Penukonda, Paritala Sunita, from the town. Later, she was sent out of the town by the police.

In Tadipatri, the police arrested TDP leaders -- Rumandla Ramachandraiah, Palle Raghunatha Reddy -- and two others when they were moving in the town. Similarly, the police sent J.C. Prabhakar Reddy, the younger brother of J.C. Diwakar Reddy, home when he was visiting the first ward. Mr. Prabhakar Reddy and the TDP leader, Peram Nagi Reddi, were house arrested.
