NEW DELHI: Several National Service Scheme (NSS) functionaries and volunteers were on Saturday conferred with Indira Gandhi NSS Awards for 2003-04 and 2004-05 for their contribution to community service. The 33 awardees included two universities -- Kerala University, Thiruvananthapuram, and Dr. R. M. L. Awadh University in Faizabad, Uttar Pradesh -- 11 Programme Officers/NSS Units and 20 volunteers from across the country. The Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Prithviraj Chavan, described the NSS as an instrument of selfless service to society. Terming it the most powerful student movement that has emerged in the last 35 years, Mr. Chavan recalled the NSS contribution to disaster management; particularly during the super cyclone in Orissa in 1999, the Gujarat earthquake in 2001 and the tsunami devastation. The Minister also announced an increase in the cash component of the award from next year. These awards were instituted in 1993-94 during the silver jubilee year of the NSS. The NSS family today has more than 22 lakh student youth volunteers .
