MANGALORE: Arohana, a group comprising of mountaineers, adventurers, and conservationists, have objected to the efforts made by the Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd. (KIOCL) to continue mining in the Kudremukh range. In a press release issued here on Thursday, convenor of Arohana, G.N. Ashokavardhana alleged that the KIOCL has used a monitoring committee involving environmentalist Suresh Heblikar as a facade to try and continue mining operations beyond the stipulated closure date. The committee had no authority or locus standii to reverse the decision of the Supreme Court and to bargain with the Government to allow KIOCL to continue mining for several more years. The Supreme Court has already given its ruling that the KIOCL should stop mining in December 2005, Mr. Ashokavardhana said. He alleged that the company is distorting facts by carrying advertisement campaigns in the media was.
