There has been mixed reactions to the ban on cycle rickshaws in Kolkata with those opposing it highlighting the plight of the workers in the absence of clear rehabilitation schemes. There are several categories of such workers in Kerala. They include boat workers who ferried people and materials till the bridges came, tea vendors who did brisk business till the vending machines replaced them and peanut sellers who went out of business after popcorn and potato chips invaded the market. The social problems thrown up by modernisation and development have much relevance in Kerala where development plans are fraught with difficulties. What do you think is a way out?
