Three jail officials suspended after riot
|
Five inmates injured; magisterial inquiry ordered; situation under control says District Magistrate
|
AGRA:
Three officials of the District Jail here were suspended on Sunday after inmates went on the rampage following the death of two undertrials.
District Magistrate Sanjay Prasad suspended the jailor and two deputy jailors and ordered a magisterial probe into incidents of brickbatting and rioting that inmates indulged in after an undertrial committed suicide. The situation was under control, he said and added that five inmates were injured in the melee.
He denied reports that one prisoner was killed and five were injured when the staff opened fire.
The death of another prisoner, Aslam, was a matter of "coincidence;" he died during treatment in the jail hospital.
Mr. Prasad said Aslam had been beaten up at the time of his arrest .
Jail sources said the agitating prisoners had set fire to the jail hospital and the kitchen alleging that they were "not caring for patients" and were providing food "unfit for human consumption." PTI
