THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The KPCC has protested against the attack on the Kozhikode unit of the Mangalam newspaper allegedly by CPI(M) workers last night. KPCC general secretary Joseph Vazhackan said that the attack was the latest instance of the fascist methods being used by the CPI(M) in North Kerala. He said that the disruption of printing of a newspaper and beating up of press workers were something unheard of in democracies. The attack showed that the pronouncements of CPI(M) about freedom of the press and freedom of expression were all intended to hoodwink people. Justification of the attack by party leaders indicated that the party was out to gag not only the UDF workers but also the media. He noted that the State Election Commission had been forced to provide insurance to officials on election duty in Kannur following refusal of many employees to go for election duty there. The employees of the Managalam unit here held a protest meeting on Sunday and demanded action against the attackers.
