New equipment to give boost to CCMB research

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Advanced spectroscopy and state-of-the-art proteomics facilities were inaugurated at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) by R.A. Mashelkar, Director-General, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, here on Sunday.

The setting up of spectroscopy facility would give a boost to the R&D programme as well as provide services to the industry in safety evaluation of biotech products, centre director Lalji Singh said.

The facility will help the CCMB's efforts in understanding how infectious parasites enter cell membranes and escape the immune response, causes of cataract formation, depression and certain neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, according to a press release.

Proteomics, the study of total cellular proteins present in living cells, will help in better understanding of diseases, identifying novel diagnostics tools for early detection of ailments and developing new therapies.
