CHENNAI: It was an occasion to remember the past, when the Cine Musicians' Union and the Cine Musicians Trust put up a function on Sunday to felicitate the stalwarts of yesteryears who have enriched musical tradition with their innovative and imaginative pieces of work. Since 1995, when music director Ilaiyaraaja took over the sponsorship of the Trust's annual felicitation programme, it has become a tradition to honour personalities under the sponsorship of a music director. The practice has continued under music directors A.R. Rahman, Keeravani, S.A. Raj Kumar, Deva, Koteswara Rao, Mani Sharma, Harris Jayaraj and Vidyasagar. This year, it was music director Bharadwaj's turn. Maestro M.S. Viswanathan on arrival immediately sought the blessings of the chief guest, Sangeetha Kalanidhi B. Rajam Iyer, carnatic vocalist. Music director Ganesh of the Shanker-Ganesh duo made his first public appearance after a gap. He had not been keeping well. Bharadwaj said: "I am very happy to be this year's donor for conducting the function." Each year the Cine Musicians' Union honours 25 persons. This year they selected music directors S.P. Venkatesan, T.A. Johnson and K.J. Joy, three assistant music directors and two singers P. Jayachandran and S.P. Sailaja, two junior playback artists and fifteen instrument players. Each member was honoured with a garland, shawl, gold ring and cash prize. President of the Cine Musicians' Union K.N. Ramasubramanian was felicitated. B. Rajam Iyer said music was divine and musicians must strive hard to improve the standard of their music in a big way. A couple of members, who were felicitated this year, donated their cash prizes to the Trust.
