This Day That Age
The All-Party Goa Liberation Committee of Maharashtra, which concluded its three-day deliberations in Poona on September 25, has reaffirmed its resolve to continue the satyagraha for liberating Goa. It stated that there was no moral or political justification for withdrawing the satyagraha, to abandon which would be highly detrimental to the cause of Goa. The Committee was specially called to decide its future course of action in the light of the Government's policy banning the entry of satyagrahis into Goa. The Committee, which had been directing and coordinating the satyagraha movement so far, expressed the view that the Government had no valid and convincing grounds for calling on the people to desist from offering satyagraha, much less for adopting "coercive measures" for preventing the satyagrahis from reaching the Goa border. It announced that a batch of satyagrahis would be sent to offer satyagraha in Goa on October 2, birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. The Committee observed that the AICC resolution and the Government's new policy had affected the national unity built up during the struggle. It would take a certain period of time to remobilise popular opinion for carrying forward the satyagraha. The Committee said it would send the next batch of satyagrahis by January 26, the Republic Day.
