Bail cancelled to former Minister

Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday cancelled the bail granted by the Allahabad High Court to former Uttar Pradesh Minister Amarmani Tripathi and his wife Madhumani, accused in the murder of Hindi poetess Madhumita Shukla.

A Bench of Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice Altamas Kabir set aside the Allahabad High Court order and cancelled the bail granted to the two. It cancelled the bail bonds and asked them to surrender forthwith failing which the State would take appropriate steps for their arrest.

SLP filed

The CBI had filed a Special Leave Petition against the impugned order contending that the bail granted by the High Court to Mr. Tripathi and his wife should be cancelled as being influential persons they could tamper with witnesses.

The CBI said the accused had attempted to interfere with the investigation of the case from the day the poetess was murdered at her Lucknow residence.

The apex court accepted the CBI's plea and cancelled their bail.
