About 5,000 kids are participating in Toyota Car Art Contest

CHENNAI: It is the busy Poonamalee High Road.Behind the glass doors of the Lanson Toyota car showroom, tiny fingers hold crayons, pencils, pens, scales, compass and protractors to design the car of the future. It is the Toyota Dream Car Art Contest 2005.

Children in three age groups — below nine, 10-12 and 13-15 years — have their eyes glued to the poster on the floor as they busily sketch car designs. There are amphibian cars with wings, capable of moving on water, land and in air. A boy is making an artful sketch of a car in celebration of womanhood; there is a little girl colouring the good old Dolphin.

The competition is not just in Chennai. About 5,000 children across the country will compete with children from Pakistan, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Korea and Taiwan over the next two months. The prizes will be announced in January next.

The contest, announced by the Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan, also has prizes for Indian entries. In each category, the first prize is a personal computer worth Rs. 30,000, the second is educational books worth Rs. 20,000 and the third is books worth Rs. 10,000. There are several prizes in store for winners, including a trip to Japan.

Overwhelming response

Atsushi Toyoshima, managing director, Toyota Kirloskar Motor, said: "Last year, we saw an overwhelming response to the contest from children around the world. The highest number of entries was received from India." The entries will be sent to Japan where the screening and announcement of winners will take place.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor will announce the Indian winners. The international winning entries will be announced in the January 2006 issue of Readers Digest.
