MADIKERI: Rain damage in the three taluks of Kodagu district this monsoon, up to September 20, has been put at Rs. 42.65 crores. Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav told presspersons here on Monday that Somwarpet taluk had suffered the most with a loss of Rs. 15.21 crores. It is followed by Virajpet taluk, which has suffered a loss of Rs. 10.33 crores. The loss estimated in Madikeri taluk is Rs. 8.47 crores. As many as four persons have died, three in Somwarpet taluk and one in Viajpet taluk, for which a compensation of Rs. 50,000 each was paid, Mr. Yadav said. Loss under the Revenue Department in Somwarpet taluk is Rs. 52.28 lakhs, it is Rs. 8.29 lakhs under the Agriculture Department, Rs. 4.21 crores under the Horticulture Department, Rs. 4.43 crores under the Public Works Department, Rs. 5.80 crores under the Panchayat Raj Engineering wing and Rs. 16 lakhs under Minor Irrigation Department. According to estimates, the loss under the Revenue Department in Virajpet taluk is Rs. 20.65 lakhs while it is Rs. 4.24 lakhs under the Agriculture Department. The Horticulture Department has suffered a loss of Rs. 1.22 crores. The Public Works Department has put its loss at Rs. 3.30 crores while the Panchayat Raj Engineering wing has put its loss at Rs. 5.51 crores. The Minor Irrigation Department has suffered a loss of Rs. 5 lakhs. The loss suffered by the Revenue Department in Madikeri taluk is Rs. 37.35 lakhs and that of the Agriculture Department is Rs. 4.20 lakhs. The Horticulture Department has suffered Rs. 1.50 crores loss, the Public Works Department Rs. 1.60 crores, the Panchayat Raj Engineering wing Rs. 4.77 crores and the Minor Irrigation Department Rs. 17.50 lakhs. Madikeri taluk has recorded 3,158.2 mm rainfall this year (January 1 to September 20), followed by Somwarpet taluk with 2,705.2 mm and Virajpet taluk with 2,266.1 mm. Bhagamandala has received the highest with 5,884.7 mm.
MESCOM loss
Mr. Yadav said the loss sustained by Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM), Kodagu, because of rain is Rs. 43.63 lakhs. Wires of 17.63 km in length and 1,026 poles were lost in the rain in the three taluks. A sum of Rs. 10 lakhs had been disbursed to MESCOM to take up immediate relief works as a special case, Mr. Yadav said.
Coffee
The Coffee Board has estimated the loss to coffee at Rs. 8.20 crores, involving 1,600 tonnes, in the three taluks of the district. Mr. Yadav said he had disbursed Rs. 1 crore to tahsildars of the three taluks to take up immediate relief works. Action plan for the three taluks, involving Rs. 4.69 crores initially, had been approved. These were being taken up on priority and are to be completed by September, Mr. Yadav said. A proposal had been sent to the Government seeking two acres of land to relocate 18 families living on the banks of the Cauvery at Karadigodu, near Siddapur. Floods submerged their lands every year. Private parties were ready to offer land but the Government reply was being awaited.
