Rebels fail to make a mark in Repalle

Staff Reporter

  • 15 Congress rebel candidates in fray; they get three seats
  • Out of 28 seats, Congress wins 20
  • CPI(M) bags one seat

REPALLE (GUNTUR DIST): Repalle was the most keenly-watched Municipality in the district as there were 15 Congress rebel candidates who were expected to give a tough fight to the Congress nominees. The sphere of influence of the rebel candidates, however, got confined to only three seats giving a blow to the APIIC Chairman, Ambati Rambabu, who led the rebels.

The town Congress president, Rebba John Daniel, who contested as a rebel from the 23rd ward was confident of winning at least eight of the 15 seats they contested. He and his wife, Rebba Baby Kalpana, who contested from the 20th ward, were victorious while Daniel's brother John Paul who contested from the 19th ward had to concede defeat to the Congress' Jagarlamudi Prasanth Kumar.

    Dismal show by BJP

Out of the 28 seats in this municipality, the Congress won 20, the Congress rebels 3, the Telugu Desam Party won four seats and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) could win one seat. The performance of the Bharatiya Janata Party was dismal while the Bahujan Samaj Party, which contested from 2nd and 15th wards, could not even get two-digit votes. Even in Bapatla, the Congress rebels could win only three wards while the Congress could notch up 19 out of the 34 wards in the municipality. The TDP won 11 seats, including the seat from the 9th ward, which it won unopposed. The lone BJP candidate was Bramhambatla Leela Padma Latha, a candidate from the 19th ward, who opened the account for the party in the municipality. The TDP town president, Annam Satish Prabhakar and other TDP leaders like Usa Rambabu, Yalavala Mastanamma and Immadisetty Ankamma Rao were among the victorious TDP candidates.

In Ponnuru Municipality, a stronghold of the TDP, the Congress won 20 seats while the TDP had to content itself with only 10 seats. One seat was won by an independent, N. Chinna Venkateshwarlu, who contested from the 28th ward.
