CHENNAI: The Unorganised Workers Federation, consisting of representatives of around 80 trade unions of workers in the unorganised sector, will hold a rally on Monday to protest the proposed social security and conditions of work bills to be tabled in the winter session of Parliament. Social security or pension for the unorganised workforce, which is estimated to form more than 90 per cent of the labour force, is now being legislated upon with few provisions to implement the measures suggested, said members of the Federation in a press conference held recently. All unorganised workers in agricultural and fish work are being clubbed together in the proposed bills when their requirements are very different they point out. They also say that trade unions are being denied any role in the envisaged processes and are not even allowed to register workers for pension. The planned rally will demand that the Central Government legislate comprehensively on pension, housing, dispute resolution, sexual harassment, maternity and child care for unorganised workers. Demands to the State Government include implementation of pension, ESI and housing, immediate provision of relief to accident victims with permanent disability during 2000-2004, providing adequate staff on boards formed for labour welfare and fixing minimum wages for domestic workers and hand embroidery workers.
