Migration of engineers `inevitable under WTO'

Special Correspondent

Engineers' Day celebrated at Neyveli on September 15

CUDDALORE: Indians are no strangers to seafaring, as from ancient times they had been undertaking voyages to many countries in pursuit of trade. This has given birth to the Tamil sayings that "go overseas in search of wealth," and "Treat every place as yours and all people your relatives," according to S.Velusami, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Annamalai University.

Mr Velusami was delivering a speech on "World Trade Organisation and Engineering profession" organized by the Neyveli centre of the Institution of Engineers, and the Engineers and Scientists' Association as part of the Engineers' Day celebrations at Neyveli near here on September 15.

He said in the context of the WTO and globalisation, the mobility of the engineers from one country to other would be inevitable.

T. Rajendran, General Manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd, in his speech said Sir M. Visvesvaraya was a role model for engineers and whose birthday was being celebrated as Engineers' Day.

Visvesvaraya was raised to the level of Diwan and was also conferred the titles "Sir" and Bharat Ratna.

Mr Rajendran said as part of the expansion programme, the BSNL proposed to appoint 3,000 engineers as Junior Telecom Officers.

The GM further said the broadband service of the BSNL would soon be extended to Neyveli.

He called upon the people to make use of the deposit scheme of the BSNL that offered 9 per cent interest, higher than the rate prevailing in the market.
