COIMBATORE: : A single entrance test should be conducted for admission to all professional courses, Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy said on Monday. At a panel discussion at Rathinam College here, Mr. Swamy said only multiple choice questions should be asked, and scores should be accepted by all institutions for admission to various courses. Reservation should be given only to the weaker sections to bring them on a par with the others. Since the present educational system was a modified version of the one created by the British to produce clerks, the curriculum should be restructured to meet the current needs. All learners should know the basics of mathematics and the law. Banks should offer educational loans based on the future earning power of students rather than on the basis of collateral security. This would enable all meritorious students to afford the education of their choice. Colleges should be given the option of receiving government funding and implementing seat reservation, or declining assistance and not providing reservation. In India, the attitude of students to education was to "learn, memorise, pass exams and get a job", but in the developed countries, the aim was to fashion a "questioning mind" and opt for courses based on aptitude and interest.
