ANANTAPUR: Supporters of an independent candidate N. Ramakrishna Reddy who was elected from the 41st division in Anantapur Corporation went on rampage in two localities of his TDP and CPI rivals immediately after declaration of results. As the victory procession was passing through Yuvajana Colony and Vaddera Colony, the supporters of Mr. Reddy went berserk and damaged everything they came across on the way to Janashakti Nagar. They pulled down a hut, smashed a public telephone booth and an auto, entered the houses of TDP and CPI candidates, beaten up the inmates and ransacked the belongings. The supporters of Mr. Ramakrishna, district president of Rythu Coolie Sangham, were on a vengeance as the CPI activists had roughed up two of his supporters on the day of polling. The supporters first barged into the house of TDP candidate Bangarakka and roughed her, her husband and son and ransacked the belongings. Later, they entered the house of CPI candidate Narayanaswamy beat him up and ransacked the house. After the victory procession passed the two localities the TDP and CPI supporters informed the police. Within 15 minutes lathi-wielding policemen swooped on Janashakti Nagar and reportedly canned his supporters.
Arrested
The police bundled Mr. Ramakrishna and his brother into jeeps. In all, about 30 supporters were taken into custody.
