Mayor aspirants from Congress, TDP focus on independents

KARIMNAGAR: It is a hung verdict for the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation as no political party has secured absolute majority.

Against the total of 50 divisions in the corporation, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) emerged victorious in 15 divisions, Congress in 13, MIM in 9, independents in 10, BJP in two and TRS in division.

The CPI and CPI(M), which had contested from five and one division respectively in alliance with the Congress, did not win anywhere. Interestingly, Congress Mayor candidate Tirupathi Goud and Town Congress president Akarapu Bhaskar Reddy lost in the elections. TDP Mayor candidate Bonala Rajesham also lost. With a hung verdict the mayor aspirants from the TDP and the Congress were now focussing their attention on luring the support of independents. TDP aspirant went a step ahead and reportedly `abducted' some independents after their victory promising them of several sops.

Congress secured absolute majority in Jagtial and Korutla municipal councils. However, the TDP secured majority from Sircilla municipal council by winning from 14 wards, Congress from 7, independents 4, BJP three and TRS one.
