Sonia's visit today

HYDERABAD: United Progressive Alliance chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi will visit the flood-affected areas of Krishna and West Godavari districts on Tuesday. Ms. Gandhi will arrive at Gannavaram by a special flight and watch a power-point presentation and a photo exhibition at the airport on the impact of the flood. She will reach Vijayawada in the afternoon.

Jolt for 3 Ministers

Hyderabad: Three Ministers -- M. Satyanarayana Rao (Karimnagar), Ponnala Lakshmaiah (Jangaon) and Mohd. Ali Shabbir (Kamareddy), were among the dozen Congress MLAs or CLP associate members who suffered the ignominy of losing the municipal elections in their own Assembly constituencies. The others given a jolt by the voters were K. Seetharam (Bheemunipatnam), P. Prakasa Rao (Gudur), K. Chitte Abbayi (Amalapuram), Krishnarjuna Chowdhary (Mandapeta), G. Srinivas (Bhimavaram), Perni Nani (Pedana), Neelavathi (Guntakal), C. Ramachandra Reddy (Adilabad), N. Diwakar Rao (Mancherial) and Shashidhar Reddy (Medak).

Blast in pharma unit

Sangareddy: There was a huge blast in A-Block reactor of Gundlamachanoor unit of Arch Pharmalabs ltd in Hathnoor mandal in Medak district on Monday afternoon. The intensity of the blast was such that it destroyed a part of the roof.

Threat to resign

KADAPA: TDP's corporator-elect Penagaluru Hemavathi on Monday threatened to resign from the elected post if the party does not initiate action against a party leader who worked against her.

Se said former Kadapa ZPTC member B. Srinivasulu worked against party nominees in the seventh and eighth divisions.

74.50 p.c. polling in Venkatagiri

Nellore: Venkatagiri town, which was recently upgraded as a municipality, which went to polls on Monday, recorded 74.50 per cent of polling. Elections have assumed wide political importance, as Primary Education Minister N. Rajyalakshmi represents the constituency. The TDP too has taken the polls as a prestige issue and its leaders, including district party chief S. Chandramohan Reddy camped regularly at Venkatagiri town. It is widely believed that Monday's results in the district reflecting the Congress party's poor performance in Gudur may cast a shadow over Venkatagiri. - Staff Reporter

Attack on scribes: 5 held

Nellore: The police in Nellore town have rounded up five persons in connection with the assault on journalists by groups belonging to the Anam brothers. Search is on for others numbering about ten.

Meanwhile, the police have banned victory processions in connection with municipal results and beefed up security following violent incidents on Saturday. - Staff Reporter

Class 4 student dies in accident

NALGONDA: A fourth class student Ranabothu Ashrita Reddy (9) was run over by a lorry at Kodad town in Nalgonda district on Monday. She died on the spot.

According to the police, the accident took place when the girl was crossing the road to enter a private school on Huzurnagar road.

The driver fled the scene leaving behind the vehicle. The police have booked a case against the driver. - Staff Reporter

Unicef representative visits Medak

Sangareddy: Unicef's chief of child development and nutrition section in New Delhi Werner Cshultink visited Anganwadi centres in Patancheru, Isnapur and Sivampet of Medak district on Monday. Later, addressing the ICDS supervisors meeting here he wanted the authorities to concentrate on the nutritional aspect of children between 0-3 years of age for a disease free life in the future. He said that Medak is one of the 16 districts in the country selected by the Unicef for active cooperation.

Congress `camp' at Annavaram

Rajahmundry: The Congress party, which won four municipalities and Kakinada Corporation in the recent civic polls held a camp with its elected ward members at Lord Satyanarayana temple on the hilltop in Annavaram. It had asked all its members to be present by Monday evening to chalk out the strategy to be adopted for the Chairperson's election to be held on 30th of this month.

Processions dispersed

Kakinada: The police dispersed crowds peacefully at least at two places in the port city, when they tried to take out victory processions in violation of the prohibitory orders on Monday. The City Law and Order Circle Inspector Avula Subba Rao said that they had to chase the crowds at Bhanugudi Junction and also at Yetimoga, as they tried to take out processions without obtaining the permission. He said the police patrol parties moved round the city ensuring that no untoward incidents took place, keeping in view the previous experience. He claimed that the situation had been very much peaceful in the city. Correspondent
