KOLLAM: Five members of a family were found dead in their house at Nedungolam, near Paravur, on Monday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Rahulan (53), who operated an autorickshaw in Kollam city, his wife, Karuna (48); their daughters, Veena (14) and Reshma(12); and Karuna's mother, Pankajakshi (85). The police suspect it to be a suicide pact but the cause remains a mystery. The police said preliminary examinations showed that Pankajakshi was asphyxiated and killed. Indications were that the others had consumed liquor mixed with poison. By 8 p.m. on Sunday night, Rahulan had gone to his sister's house in the city to park the auto as usual and left for his house saying that he had to take his wife to hospital as she had developed a cardiac problem. As he had not arrived in the morning to take the auto, his sister went to Nedungolam to enquire about Karuna's health condition. As the house was found locked, she returned. Around 3 p.m., her husband and Karuna's brother visited the house and noticed it was locked from inside. They then broke open the house only to find all the inmates lying dead. While the bodies of Rahulan, Karuna and Veena were lying in the drawing room, that of Reshma and Pankajakshi were found in a bedroom.
