Special AIR, DD news bulletins

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan would air special news bulletins in connection with the counting of votes in the local bodies elections on Tuesday. According to an AIR release, the special regional bulletins would be aired at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1.30 p.m., 2.30 p.m., 3.30 p.m., 8 p.m., 9.30 p.m. and 11.05 p.m. Special programmes analysing the election results would be held from 3.35 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. The duration of the regional news bulletins at 12.30 p.m. and 6.20 p.m. would be 15 minutes. According to a Doordarshan release, special news bulletins would begin at 7.30 a.m., 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 noon, 1 p.m. and at one hour duration till 7 p.m. Special news analysis programme would be held from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., the release said. — Staff Reporter

Charge against SEC

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Joint Council of State Service Organisations has said that over 50 per cent of the 2,17,562 employees deployed on election duty could not cast their votes in the local bodies elections. Joint Council general secretary C.R. Jose Prakash attributed this to the delay in ward delimitation and said the Government and the State Election Commission had not shown enough vigilance in the matter. Since the ward delimitation could not be completed till August 15, only very little time was available for numbering the 60 lakh houses, designation of reserved wards, finalisation of voters' lists, arrangement of polling booths, deployment of polling staff and preparation of ballot papers. The Joint Council had pointed out that at least another week would be required to complete the processes. — Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has decided to invoke dies non on Government employees and teachers who participate in the all India general strike being organised on September 29. The wage for the day will be deducted from the salary for October of those who participate in the strike. — Special Correspondent

Seawall construction progressing: Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Water Resources Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan on Monday denied reports that the construction of seawalls in the tsunami affected areas had been discontinued. The Minister said in a statement that June to September was off-season period not suitable for construction of seawalls. Still, special sanction had been accorded for carrying on the construction wherever possible. The work was progressing. Mr. Radhakrishnan said Rs.16 crores had been sanctioned for construction of a total of 8.5 km of seawalls at Alapad, Arattupuzha, Chellanam and Vypeen and nearby areas of Kuthiayathodu, Ottamasseri and Pattanakkad. Besides, Rs.4.46 crores had been sanctioned for carrying out temporary protection works in different districts, following high waves and flooding that occurred in May this year. — Special Correspondent

Remembering Swadeshabhimani

Thiruvananthapuram: The Swadeshabhimani Smaraka Trust has decided to organise a five-year-long programme to commemorate the centenary of the exile of the firebrand journalist, Swadeshabhimani Ramakrishna Pillai. General secretary Thampanoor Ravi said the Trust committee chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had taken a decision in this regard. The Trust also organised a commemorative function on the occasion of the 95th anniversary of Swadeshabhimani's exile from the erstwhile kingdom of Travancore. The former KPCC president Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, who inaugurated the function, said Swadeshabhimani's pen had moved against corruption and injustice in society. His ideals were now more relevant and important. — Special Correspondent

Paediatric meet planned

Thiruvananthapuram: The 19th South Zone Conference of the Indian Academy of Paediatrics, being organised by the Department of Paediatrics, Medical College, will be held in the city from Friday to Sunday. Union Minister for Health Anbumani Ramadoss will inaugurate the conference on Friday. Health Minister K.K. Ramachandran will be the chief guest on the occasion. The theme for this year's conference is `Healthy child: a national treasure.' Nearly 500 delegates from across the country will take part in the three-day conference and continuing medical education programme. — Staff Reporter

Injured in blast

Thiruvananthapuram: Two persons were admitted to Medical College Hospital on Monday with injuries sustained at sea when crude explosives used for fishing exploded. They have been identified as Kabeer, 35, and Mohammed Rafi, 30, both from Vizhinjam. The right palm of Mohammed Rafi was severed in the incident. — Staff Reporter

Directive on speed governors

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All stage carriages and heavy transport vehicles should be fitted with speed governors before Friday, a press note issued by the Transport Commissioner has said. This is in accordance with provision 118 of the Central Motor Vehicles Act.

BSNL pre-paid connection

KOTTAYAM: Those who have applied for BSNL pre paid connections till September 1, 2005, at the mobile customer centres and franchisees will get their SIM cards by September 28, according to press note. The date of distribution of sim cards for those who have applied after the cut off date will be informed later, the pressnote said. - Staff Reporter

Medical camp till October 10

KOTTAYAM: The Frontier Cardiac Care Centre in association with Dr. K.M. Cheriyan Foundation has begun a two-week `heart camp' here on Monday. The camp will continue till October 10. The centre also started functioning of an `Anti Failure and Research Wing' to provide the non-invasive outpatient treatment called enhanced external counter pulsation. The treatment offers non-surgical option for patients with chest pain, hospital authorities said. — Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering of the TKM College of Engineering is organising a four-day National level technical meet at the college from September 28. The meet titled `Centura 05' will be inaugurated by Minister for Power, Aryadan Mohammed. — Staff Reporter

CBI probe sought

PALAKKAD: The Jana Jagratha and `One Earth One Life' in a joint statement here on Monday urged the State Government to order a CBI inquiry into the seizure of sandalwood, chips and powder from a rice mill at Erimayur, Alathur, on Friday.

They alleged that `foul play' had caused the police to delay the handing over the 25 tonnes of sandalwood, chip and powder valued at Rs.5 crores to the Forest Department despite repeated requests. — Staff Reporter
