Gandhi Jayanti Mela planned

NEW DELHI: To commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, a five-day "Gandhi Jayanti Mela" will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Roshnara Garden here on Wednesday.

Organised by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Mela will see participation of the Delhi Jal Board, Delhi Fire Service, Punjabi Academy, Hindi Academy, Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation, Information and Broadcasting Directorate, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi State AIDS Control Society, Songs and Drama Division and Directorate of Industries.

An "Akhand Charkha Yajna" by volunteers of Gandhian organisations will also be held from September 28 to October 2.

New telephone exchange

NEW DELHI: About 3,900 phones of level `2254' of Laxmi Nagar DI (E10B) exchange are being transferred to the state-of-art Laxmi Nagar D4 (OCB) main exchange on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

According to Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, the numbers will remain unchanged. However, customers whose phone numbers are working from level `2254' and are availing of the dynamic code and phone plus facilities would have to re-register their secret code by dialling 123 ABCD ABCD, where ABCD is the secret code. In case of any difficulty, subscribers can contact the Sub Divisional Engineer (OCB) Laxmi Nagar or dial 22451200 or Divisional Engineer (FRS) on 22521564.

Award for NGO

NEW DELHI: Aum Bal Suraksha Andolan (ABSA) -- a Noida-based non-government organisation -- received the UNDP/Government of India award for livelihood and capacity building among urban marginalised groups.

Founded four years ago by Benodini Banerjei, ABSA has been running two schools for the children of construction workers, rickshaw pullers and street vendors with the cooperation of the pradhan and panchayat of Barola village in Noida.

Inter-school street play contest

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Public School hosted an inter-school street play competition -- under the aegis of Delhi Schools' Literacy Project -- at its premises here recently.

While Kiran Walia, MLA, was the chief guest on the occasion, the chairperson of Springdales Education Society, Rajni Kumar, was the guest of honour.

New office-bearers

NEW DELHI: The Association of Cooperative Housing Societies, I.P. Extension, held its general body meeting and elections in East Delhi on Sunday.

Those elected to the governing council for the year 2005-06 include H.R. Tyagi (chairman); C.L. Sharma (vice-chairman); K. Srinivasan (secretary) and S.K. Agarwal (joint secretary-cum-treasurer).
