Hooda's silence disturbing: INLD

Special Correspondent

Even the crucial SYL Canal issue was neither broached by the Prime Minister nor raised by Hooda

CHANDIGARH: : The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) on Monday criticised the silence of the Haryana unit of the Congress and the Bhupinder Singh Hooda Government in raising issues concerning Haryana and getting a special package for the State from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during his two-day visit to the State Capital.

INLD secretary-general and Rajya Sabha member Ajay Chautala said in a statement here that Dr. Manmohan Singh had showered a number of development projects on Punjab, but "in sharp contrast, not only was Haryana not given any new project, it was ignored to such an extent that no mention was made of even those projects which were already in the pipeline''.

He said that it was a sad state of affairs that even the crucial issue of Sutlej-Yamuna Link Canal, the lifeline of Haryana, was neither broached by the Prime Minister nor deemed fit by Mr. Hooda to raise. Mr. Chautala said that by announcing a multi-faceted package for Punjab, the Prime Minister had sent an unmistakable message that Punjab's Congress Chief Minister Amarinder Singh was being rewarded for piloting a Bill in the Punjab Assembly which denied the rightful share of river waters to Haryana.

The "silence'' of Mr.Hooda on these issues was disturbing, he added.

Mr. Chautala recalled that this "momentous betrayal'' of the people of Haryana was evident even when the Congress President, Sonia Gandhi, had visited Jind in May last to address a "thanksgiving'' rally. She had failed to address the issue of the SYL canal in her speech. The Congress leaders had then too refused to raise this issue with her, he added.
