Order on new power tariff today

Bangalore: The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission will pronounce its order on the new electricity tariff on Tuesday. It had received representations from various electricity companies on upward revision of tariff and heard the views of members of the public and institutions. Astronautics Academy award for U.R. Rao

BANGALORE: U.R. Rao, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, has been awarded the Theodore Von Karman Award of the International Academy of Astronautics, Paris, for 2005.

The award will be presented to him during the 56th International Astronautical Congress at Fukuoka, Japan, on October 16, an official release said. Prof. Rao is the first person from a developing country to receive the award. — Staff Reporter

Wipro to plant trees on Tamil Nadu coast

Bangalore: A village on the Nagapattinam coast in Tamil Nadu will have a strong connection with Bangalore's information technology major Wipro. The village, Pushpavanam, was in the news in 2001 when it set a record by planting 80,224 trees along the coastline. These trees acted as a "sea wall" when the tsunami waves struck the coast last December, minimising the damage from the giant waves. Wipro Cares, the social responsibility wing of Wipro employees, will now try to match this record by helping villagers to plant more trees on October 1. — Special Correspondent

Over 700 attend Heart Day camp

Bangalore: Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology screened 702 persons for cardiac fitness on World Heart Day on Sunday. Investigations were carried out free of charge. Medical Superintendent of the Hospital S.T. Yavagal said lifestyle and diet modifications and weight reduction were suggested to many of those who attended the check-up camp. — Special Correspondent

Strike by Defence civilian employees

Bangalore: The coordination committee of the Defence Civilian Employees' Union has called for day's token strike on Thursday. All affiliated unions will join the strike. The civilian employees in defence undertakings have asked for a pay commission, restriction on foreign direct investment, revision of pay scales, increase in earned leave, curbs on privatisation and disinvestment and measures for reviving sick units. They also want labour laws strictly enforced.

Elevated as Distinguished Scientist

BANGALORE: R.P. Ramalingam, Director, Defence Avionics Research Establishment, has been elevated as Distinguished Scientist by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Mr. Ramalingam has worked with the DRDO for 33 years contributing to the fields of radar signal processing, multimode phased array radar, electronic warfare systems, avionics, and engine control, an official release said. — Staff Reporter

Speak from party forums, Jalappa told

GULBARGA: Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh on Monday dismissed the statement of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister R.L. Jalappa that Janata Dal (S) President H.D. Deve Gowda is weakening the Congress by encouraging defections.

Addressing presspersons here before leaving for Hubli by helicopter to participate in a Congress workers' convention, he said Mr. Jalappa should work for strengthening the party instead of issuing statements. — Special Correspondent

Man held under Goonda Act

BELLARY: Bellary Police have arrested Sundar, an alleged matka gambler, under the Goonda Act and lodged him in the Raichur jail. So far, the Goonda Act had been invoked against four persons in the district.

Sundar, a resident of Morgalli in Cowl Bazaar locality, is wanted in 12 cases and was convicted five times.

He was arrested under the Goonda Act as per the instructions of the Deputy Commissioner. He has been lodged in Raichur jail, Superintendent of Police Pankaj Kumar Thakur said.

Mr. Thakur said the police have prepared a list of 15 people who are not only involved in matka. They will be arrested under the Goonda Act, he added. — Staff Correspondent

GADAG: The Directorate of Vocational Education, Karnataka, has decided to permit educational institutions to offer short-term courses on self-finance basis to give guidance and training to those interested in joining the Army. This is in view of the low rate of selection of candidates from the State for different non-commissioned posts in the Army. Bypoll notification

DHARWAD: M.S. Srikar, Deputy Commissioner, has issued a notification for the byelection to the Chabbi Gram Panchayat to be held on October 10. According to a press release, nominations can be filed from Tuesday. The last date for submitting nominations is October 14. The scrutiny of the nominations will take place on October 5. The last date for withdrawing nominations is October 7. The counting of votes will take place be on October 17. Villagers of Chabbi had boycotted the gram panchayat election alleging discrepancy in fixing the number of members based on the population.

Mutt clarifies

HUBLI: Raghavendra Swamy Mutt, Mantralaya, has issued a clarification with regard to the solar eclipse on October 3. It has stated that since the eclipse ends after the sunset, the devout can perform "moksha snana" and puja only next morning.

The eclipse will start at 4.22 p.m. and end at 7.02 p.m.

The sunset will take place at 6.07 p.m., according to a press release. — Special Correspondent

Couple end life

Madikeri: An elderly couple have committed suicide at Chikkamandur village in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district, according to information reaching here on Monday. The names of the dead were given as C. Janaki (68) and C. Bheemaiah (70). — Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE: Students of the MCA course in St. Aloysius College here are organising "Infovision", a two-day exhibition in Information Technology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics from Tuesday.
