Road works sanctioned

CHENNAI : Road improvement works on a few stretches of national highways in the State have been sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 3.8 crores.

Approval has been granted for improvement of NH-49 (the Madurai-Ramanathapuram road) for 14 km and reconstruction of retaining walls on NH-209 in the Dhimbham Ghat section.

Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways T. R. Baalu has given the approval, says a release. - Special Correspondent

Daily flights to Kochi

CHENNAI: Air Deccan, a low-cost carrier, on Monday launched its daily flights Kochi from Bangalore and Chennai.

The 48-seater ATR-42-500 aircraft has been deployed in this sector. The fares begins from Rs.500 plus taxes and goes up to Rs.3,100 for the Kochi-Bangalore sector. - Special Correspondent

Airtel crosses a milestone

CHENNAI : Airtel, one of the leading mobile service providers, on Monday achieved the one million-customer base in Tamil Nadu.

In his congratulatory message, Rajan Bharti Mittal, Joint Managing Director, Bharti Tele-Ventures Limited, felicitated Airtel's first and millionth customers, gifting them new handsets. Tamil Nadu joined the Delhi, Karnataka, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh circle, where Airtel has crossed the one million-customer base. - Special Correspondent

Arrival timings changed

CHENNAI : The arrival timings of the Alleppey-Chennai Central Express and the Mumbai CST-Chennai Central Mail will be changed from September 28. The Alleppey Express will reach here at 5.40 a.m. as against the current time of 5.15 a.m. The Mumbai Mail will arrive at 5 a.m. as against 5.30 a.m., says a railway release. - Special Correspondent

Motorcycle expedition

CHENNAI: The Air Forces Mechanical Transport Training Institute, Avadi has organised a 2556 km motorcycle expedition as part of the 73rd anniversary celebrations of IAF.

The ten-member expedition, led by Squadron Leader Vivek Singh was flagged off by MTTI Commanding Officer, Group Caption K Jha at the Avadi Air Force Station on Monday. The expedition would travel through Vijayawada, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Goa, Belgaum, Bangalore and Arakkonam before ending at Chennai on October 4, a release said.

Admissions last date

The last date for admissions to MBA and MS (finance) programmes in Distance Learning of the ICFAI University is September 30 (Friday). Students desirous of enrolling in the distance learning programs of ICFAI may approach the nearest ICFAI Branch.

Railway helpline

CHENNAI: Help lines, which were installed by Southern Railway for providing information on status of rail services that were affected due to heavy rains and breaches in Andhra Pradesh, were really a boon to the public, especially to "stranded passengers." The help lines received as many as 3600 calls during their four-day existence. All calls were promptly attended to and the latest information on train movement was conveyed to the callers. People from other States also contacted the help lines to get the latest information, a railway release said. — Special Correspondent

Tourism awareness rally

TIRUNELVELI : The Department of Tourism will organise a tourism awareness rally in Courtallam on Tuesday as part of the Tourism Day celebrations.

According to the Tourist Officer, P. Pushparaj, school and college students would take out the rally, which would start at Sri Parasakthi College in Courtallam, at 9.30 a.m. and pass through main areas. — Staff Reporter.

Financial aid to quadruplet

TIRUNELVELI: Collector Atul Anand gave an order for financial assistance to a labourer, whose wife gave birth to three female babies on May 3.

An official statement said that Sikkandar Begum of Tenkasi, who gave birth to three female babies, appealed to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for financial assistance to bring up the babies.

As per the direction from the Chief Minister, the Collector handed over to Mohammed Aziz - Sikkandar Begum couple the certificate for Rs. 3 lakh deposited in the Tamil Nadu Transport Development Finance Corporation and post-dated cheques for one year to draw the interest for the deposit, at a grievance day meeting held at the Collectorate on Monday.

Mr. Atul Anand also handed over the cheque for Rs. 25,000 towards medical assistance to the parents of Jayakodi (4), who requires a surgery in the rectum. — Staff Reporter.

Fatal fall for woman

Tuticorin: Muthulakshmi (57) died after she fell down from a running bus here on Sunday. Police said the woman suffered severe injuries on her head in the fall and died on the spot. The accident took place while the bus was passing through Levandipuram First Street. Murugesh (33), driver of the bus, has been arrested. — Staff Reporter

Hindi Day celebrated

MADURAI: Hindi Day was celebrated by the Indian Bank, Circle Office, at Gnanaolipuram branch recently. Various competitions were conducted and prizes distributed to winners who included staff members and their children.

Cradle babies sent to Coimbatore

ERODE: Two female babies from the Cradle Baby Centre in the Erode District Headquarters Hospital were handed over to the Children's Home at Coimbatore on Monday.

The hospital superintendent, K.K.A. Hussain Ali, handed over the kids to the representative of the Home.

No water supply

ERODE: Due to damage in the main pipeline leading to Kandaiyanthottam overhead tank from the pumping station, water pumping has been stopped to Periyasemur third grade municipal areas from Sunday night.

According to the officials, repair works are done round-the-clock and pumping will begin on September 28. Water supply would also be resumed on the same day, the officials said. - Staff Reporter

30 agri workers injured as van overturns

PERAMBALUR: Thirty agricultural labourers, most of them women, were injured when the mini-van in which they were proceeding to fields for work on Sunday morning, overturned.The injured have been admitted to the Government Headquarters Hospital here. Arumbavur police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter
