Nalgonda

TRIUMPH IN THE AIR: Congress leaders led by MLA K. Venkat Reddy taking part in a victory rally in Nalgonda on Monday.
NALGONDA: The Congress and the CPI(M) registered a resounding victory while the Telugu Desam and the BJP failed to improve their performance in four municipalities in the district. The TRS had to contend with eight wards and the Majlis party could not win even a single ward in the district for the first time in the recent past. The Congress is poised to win the chairmen seats in Nalgonda and Bhongir municipalities hands down and the Congress leaders and the Marxists are working out strategies to share Miryalaguda and Suryapet between them. The major upset in the election is the defeat of the former municipal chairperson of Suryapet, Juttukonda Satyanarayana, of the BJP at the hands of Govindu of the CPI (M) in ward no.22 with a margin of 272 votes. The former municipal chairperson of Nalgonda, P.Venkatanarayana Goud, who is also the close associate of the local MLA K.Vnkat Reddy, of the Congress could sail through with a margin of only 22 votes in 36th ward in the town. The BJP leader, Gundagoni Giribabu, who tried for the party ticket to fight in the Assembly elections, lost to his nearest rival, Md.Mujahath Ali of the Congress with a margin of about 300 votes.
BJP gets just 2 wards
The BJP, which had won 13 wards in the last elections, had to contend with only two this time. One of the winners Veerelli Andal, of the 33rd ward is the wife of the party district unit secretary, Veerelli Chandrasekhar. The ruling party candidates have come with flying colours in 21 out of 36 words though it could not forge an alliance with the CPI (M). The jubilant Congress camp organised a victory rally in the town for about four hours. Addressing a meeting at clock tower, Mr.Venkat Reddy called upon all political parties to strive for the development of the town. "The performance of the Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy's Government in the State provided the Congress a thumping majority," he observed. The Telugu Desam leader, Krishna Reddy, attributed the party's defeat to the Congress leaders' money and muscle power.
