HUMANE TOUCH: Students of the MSW course interacting with differently abled students of St. Agnes Special School in Mangalore on Monday.
MANGALORE: As many as sixty first-year students of the Master's in Social Work (MSW) course from various social work colleges in the city visited St. Agnes Special School here on Monday. While social work students study about mental and physical disabilities as part of their course, interaction with differently abled children at the school was a learning experience for them. Shruthi, principal of the school, delivered a lecture on "Mentally challenged children and the role of social workers." She stressed on the role of social workers in creating awareness among people on the causes that lead to mental disabilities in children. "It is your role as social workers to educate mothers, particularly those in rural areas, about the causes for retardation in children," she said. "While many of these students may not do well academically, they are talented and like singing, painting and participating in sports. It should be your endeavour to make them believe that they have a place in society and deserve our love," she told the social work students. "It was our intention to expose the social worker students to these children and make them understand the extent and nature of their problems," said Raghavendra Rao, lecturer at Srinivas College of Postgraduate Management Studies. Nagamanickam, assistant professor of the college, said while he has worked with the aged at an old-age home in Coimbatore, this was the first time he was interacting with differently abled children.
