Rs.1 crore worth brown sugar seized

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Acting on a tip-off, Excise sleuths made a major brown sugar seizure at Neendakara, near here, on Monday evening.

The seized dope weighing 1.15 kg is calculated to be worth more than Rs.1 crore in the international market.

Two persons have been arrested and the bike on which they were travelling taken into custody in this connection. The identity of those arrested were given as Lalu(27), a native of Kanjirapally in Kottayam district and Anil Patil (33) who belongs to Latur district in Maharasthra.

They were nabbed while taking the dope to a location at Haripad. One Vijayan, who runs a bakery at Kazhakuttam in Thiruvananthapuram district, has been identified as the kingpin behind the drug deal. Excise officers said that Vijayan places the order with Patil who delivers the stuff to the former. Lalu is a carrier distributing the dope to retailers. Excise sleuths are on the hunt for Vijayan.

Those arrested will be produced before a court at Karunagapally on Tuesday.
